Sugar Gone Wrong

Last night a bunch of us got together to watch the Bachelorette finale and I decided to try a new treat to bring. The picture on Piniterest drew me in and I thought it would be a fun {pretty} sweet that the girls could appreciate. They are called Hi-Hat Cupcakes... basically a cupcake with a firm frosting, dipped in chocolate to create a "dipped cone" effect. Well someone didn't read the recipe very well before getting started, thus creating a "chicken with her head cut off" scenerio for the 2 1/2 hours before I was supposed to leave! I should have known the minute I saw "Martha Stewart" that this recipe was going to ruin my life. Let me share an excerpt of the frosting portion of the recipe to illustrate:
In a large heatproof bowl, combine sugar, 1/4 cup water, egg whites, and cream of tartar. Using a handheld electric mixer, beat on high speed until foamy, about 1 minute. Set bowl over a pan of barely simmering water. Beat on high speed until frosting forms stiff peaks, about 12 minutes; frosting should register 160 degrees.on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla and almond extracts, and beat for 2 minutes more until frosting thickens.
Come again?!?! Did that really just tell me I have to hold a handmixer on high for 15 minutes?! And this was all after an equally intense cupcake making phase. I literally had sticky, foamy frosting oozing out of my pastry bag and all over my hands, chocolate splatter everywhere and all the bowls in my kitchen out and dirtied when Trav sauntered in to hear me screeching, "Worst idea EVER!!!".
And they didn't even turn out all pretty looking like the picture that had sucked me in. I shouldn't have been surprised. I am not Megan Shaheen, after all! :)
All the girls were super sweet to tell me they were delicious... even though they may have just feared my wrath had they not been so complimentary. But the absolute best part was... when I got home at 11pm, I walked into a spotless kitchen. Even the chocolate that had oozed down the stove burner was cleaned up. I could have fainted from happiness. JP, shmay P, Travis Evans is the sweetest guy ever!
It was so fun to hang out with a bunch of the new girls that just moved in! This next dental class will have such a good time together.
If you haven't laughed at anyone lately.... just look at me. Denyse suggested taking a cheesy pic of all of us pretending to laugh. Just look at the row of girls first. (Demurely giggling) Now look at me. (drunken Paris Hilton) I am the biggest moron ever! And that's not even real alcohol in those glasses, folks. I act like that all on my own. Hold your applause please.

LOVE IT ALL! And your cupcakes really did taste delicious. I just feel bad that you put so much work into them to not have them turn out to your liking. But I'll eat them anytime. :) And the pic makes me laugh every time I look at it. You crack me up Steph!

You do have a gem of a husband if I do say so myself! Sounds like a great Bachelorette party. Sorry about your cupcakes. I would have eaten and enjoyed them. Look at the chocolate for heaven's sakes. Did you like the outcome, JP over Ben?
