Saying farewell to our main squeeze, the first Thursday of October. He actually went to his meetings that night and didn't leave until really early the next day, but this was the kids' goodbye!
He was off to be a manly man and kill us some meat for the winter. He went with Bron and Michael and they were like little school boys, talking for months about this trip up until it happened. I was glad he was getting himself a fun guys' trip. (But I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was a teensy bit hoping he'd have a terrible time, not shoot anything and come home determined to never go on another hunting trip. ;)
That Friday was the Miyamura High School Homecoming parade. Always anxious to do something interesting around here, we met some friends downtown to watch it. Saddest parade ever. The flippin' cheerleaders didn't even dance. They sat their lazy behinds on a float and waved. Laaaame! But there was a TON of candy thrown, so the kids considered it a success. Olive was a bit shy about all the noise. I didn't mind the snuggles.
After that we went to the park, then madly raced to the mall for soccer pictures (pandemonium), grabbed trusty Taco Bell for dinner and got the kids in bed in time for the babysitter to come so I could escape to book club! Aubrey drove into town that night and met me there. CRAZY, but fun Friday!
Back to the hunt:
Friday was a scouting day I guess, so Saturday marked the first day of actual hunting! We were at Collin's soccer game that morning when I got this text message:
I KNOW my jaw dropped. Then I was excitedly shouting to no one in particular, "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! He did it! He killed a bull!" Collin ran over, thrilled, to see the picture. Despite my previous confession I was so happy for him! That's a pretty cool- even bucket list- sort of accomplishment! And it certainly helped justify the $$ spent on this endeavor! (Ahem- that was until he decided to mount it. Like, for reals mount it. Bambi staring at us from the wall, mount. Now what on earth, may I ask you, are we going to do with an elk head protruding 2 feet from the wall? He knows I'm not really mad about it, but it is kind of absurd. Maybe the poor guy can go above our bed and bless us with horrific dreams.
Saturday was also General Conference, but we missed the morning session because of the game. Then I decided to heck with the afternoon session (you can't pay attention anyway with kids- better to listen to it in peace later) and we went on a hike! I've heard a lot about Pyramid Peak, but never done it. Megan met us with her kids which made it infinitely more fun. It's only about a 15 min. drive, but you have to leave your car in a sketchy place. (Even sketchier when derelict men are loitering about. But hey, it's Gallup. You carry on!) It's 3 miles total and I had no intention of doing all of it with 6 little kids- one strapped to my front, but we did! And we even beat a group of adults that started out the same time we did. It was nice having Aubrey there. I didn't worry quite as much about one of them taking a dive off a ledge. At one point Megan said, "This is so good to let them just run and get all their energy out. It will just wear them out." Later, when the two oldest were still going full steam and I felt like collapsing, I decided it was actually the other way around. But we had a good time and I'm glad we did it! Good way to kill 3 hours. :) And Papa Johns never tasted so good afterward.
I didn't feel much like moving a muscle that night, so I picked up frozen yogurt for Aubrey and I, and we watched Divergent. I don't do that sort of thing enough!
Sunday morning we had French Toast casserole for breakfast and attempted to watch conference. I had printed off some hidden pictures pages for the boys and some games to keep them occupied. It sort of worked. And I even caught Collin watching once.
We had BLT's at Megan's for lunch, then Terry and his lady friend, Linda came over to watch the afternoon session with us. Never had a non-member over to watch conference before. So you can imagine how it felt to be sitting there with her when Elder Bednar gave his talk! Pretty cool. They had to leave after that, but Megan came over and we tried out my new deep fryer for the first time! She actually gave it to me for my birthday. Kind of interesting contraption. Not sure how often I'll use it, but it did make some yummy taco salad bowls!
That night, Aubrey and I worked on a pumpkin crafty I had found online. I think they turned out really cute!
On Monday, she took the boys to a movie after school and we had just enough time to get Fratelli's for dinner before she had to leave. It was a fun visit and we were glad she could come see us! The boys absolutely love Aunt Aubrey.
(May I just document the daily struggles of a child? He fell apart crying because the gelato was too high. Translation: he had TOO much ice cream. It's rough being 3.)
Well, after Aubrey left it was just me and these yahoo's until Trav got back Wednesday night.
I tried to take pictures every day to send to Trav to keep him in the loop. Collin was stoked to win a poster from school that matched his PJ shirt. Cowabunga, dude.
And child labor is always welcomed over here. We tried to get Ol' Dirtay looking real niiiiice for his owner to return.
No pictures of the reunion, but it was sweet indeed! Mr. Evans might just be a little bit loved around here.
